Session 2: Thing 4

December 10th, 2008 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Blog writing in general is a series of different people’s opinions. Each blog is usually short, sweet, and to the point. This is often no more than a paragraph or two at a time.  Oftentimes, the blogs are easy to read because they flow like a conversation. This makes them equally easy to understand. I am not sure if blogging has an effect on the way we read or write in general. I like to think that blogging is a quick way to express our opinions; however, if I am writing a formal paper, I know how to effectively do that. I am not so sure students can do this though. I would say many students engage in these blog sessions with their short, choppy sentences, then when it comes time to writing a paper the habits carry over. Proper grammar and punctuation do not play a significant role in most blogs; therefore, I can see where people lose proper grammar techniques. Blogging is a good tool to use when facilitating learning because you get a group consensus rather than your own. There is a whole group of people sharing their ideas and if you are actively engaged in what is going on, you should be learning new things as well.

POST 2: Thing 2 – Thoughts about Web 2.0

Complete a blog post reflecting on your initial thoughts about Web 2.0 and its role in 21st Century teaching and learning. Consider the ways in which Web 2.0 tools might change (or have already changed) your professional practice. How might you be able to use these new tools to to engage today’s “digital learners?” Why would you want to? How might you be able to use these tools to support your own learning?

I think that Web 2.0 is a great tool for the 21st century teaching and learning classroom. Web 2.0 is very intriguing to me and once I find out more about it and all the facets of it, I intend on using it more and more in my classroom. I think today’s learners will be easily engaged through the use of web 2.0 simply because it is so interactive. I would like to begin a blog session with my students. I think they would enjoy it and it would be fun. I already use on line streaming videos within my classroom. The students seem to enjoy these. In order to support my own learning, I could use blogs and posts to learn new strategies from veteran teachers. I especially like teacher tube. This is a great source for videos and instruction. The more we use these new age technology strategies in our classroom, the more our students will respond. Furthermore, it is the new thing to do and everyone likes new things. Students crave anything that is different than the norm. I think 2.0 classrooms are catching on and pretty soon, most everyone will understand why.

Thing 3 Blogging Task #1

The habit that will be most challenging for me to employ as part of this 2.0 learning experience is probably going to be begin with the end in mind. I have a hard time focusing on what the end product will be when I am working toward long term goals. I realize that I need to improve this area. I get really caught up in what needs to be done right now and it is hard for me to focus on what will happen later. My goal for this course is to try to get better at long term challenges.

The goal that is easiest for me is having confidence in myself as a competent and effective learner. I am the type of learner who works hard at achieving success. I like to learn and I rarely doubt myself. If there is something I do not understand, I will eventually figure it out or get someone to show me.  I believe that we can do anything we set our minds too.

The most important habit for me is probably going to be using technology to my advantage. I really enjoy using technology in my classroom and the students equally enjoy it. It is a very effective instructional tool for learning.
